What is Coast FIRE?
Invest hard early, then stop saving. Compounding finishes the job.
₹45L
invested at 27 grows to ~₹19 Cr by 60 at 12%, without adding a rupee
The idea
Coast FIRE is when your existing investments, with no further contributions, will grow into your full FIRE number by a conventional retirement age (we use 60).
Once you've 'coasted', your salary only has to cover today's expenses. You could take a lower-paying job you love, work part-time, or keep investing to get there sooner.
Your Coast number
Coast number = FIRE number at 60 ÷ (1 + return)^(years until 60).
Example
Age 30, FIRE number at 60: ₹12 Cr
At 12% returns for 30 years: ÷ 29.96
Coast number today ≈ ₹40L
Watch out for
Coast FIRE leans entirely on long-run returns. If returns disappoint, you'll need to start investing again, so revisit your number every year or two.
